چکیده

Plasma particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations model the interactions of charged particles with the surrounding fields. This application has been recognized as one of the grand challenge problems facing the high-performance computing community due to its huge computational requirements. Recently, with the explosive development of Internet, Java is receiving increasing attention and is thought as a potential candidate for high-performance computing. In this paper, we present our approach to developing 2and 3dimensional parallel PIC simulations in Java. We also report the execution times for both versions from performance experiments on a symmetric multi-processor (Sun E6500) and a Linux cluster of Pentium III machines. Those results are also compared with benchmark measurements of the corresponding Fortran version of the same algorithm.

Mixed-language high-performance computing for plasma simulations

Java is receiving increasing attention as the most popular platform for distributed computing. However, programmers are still reluctant to embrace Java as a tool for writing scientific and engineering applications due to its still noticeable performance drawbacks compared with other programming languages such as Fortran or C. In this paper, we present a hybrid Java/Fortran implementation of a p...

Particle in Cell solver with adaptive Cartesian Mesh: Simulations of Gas Breakdown and Streamer Formation

A new electrostatic Particle-in-Cell with Monte Carlo Collisions code with adaptive Cartesian mesh (ES-PIC-ACM) has been developed for simulation of low temperature plasmas. ESPIC-ACM has been validated for Capacitively Coupled Plasmas (CCPs) using the simplest firstorder accurate nearest grid point (NGP) technique and more accurate cloud-in-cell (CIC) methods. We have confirmed that the accura...

Ion Propulsion Simulations Using Parallel Supercomputer

A parallel, three-dimensional electrostatic PIC code is developed for largescale electric propulsion simulations using parallel supercomputers. Two algorithms are implemented in the code, a standard finite-difference (FD) PIC and a newly developed immersed-finite-element (IFE) PIC. The IFE-PIC is designed to handle complex boundary conditions accurately while maintaining the computational speed...

Development of a Scalable PIC Simulator and Its Application to Spacecraft–Plasma Interaction Problems

The particle-in-cell (PIC) method is widely used for various problems in space plasma physics. Spacecraft-plasma interaction problem is one of such extensive topics. With increasing space development and exploration, a strong demand should arise regarding better understanding of plasma disturbance around a spacecraft. For the study, we have developed an electromagnetic PIC code EMSES [1] for th...

Fast parallel Particle-To-Grid interpolation for plasma PIC simulations on the GPU

Particle-in-Cell (PIC) methods have been widely used for plasma physics simulations in the past three decades. To ensure an acceptable level of statistical accuracy relatively large numbers of particles are needed. State-of-the-art Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), with their high memory bandwidth, hundreds of SPMD processors, and half-a-teraflop performance potential, offer a viable alternativ...
